heading towards Punta Betulia through the Betulia River where
we can observe the cliffs and tropical birds, until we reach the
small communities of Plan Grande and Quinitos where we get a closer
look of the contrast of the white sandy beach and the rocky cliffs.
Finally we go upriver into a trail within the forest to a spring
known as Las Sirenas (“The Mermaids”) at this trail we make a
U turn crossing through a hanging bridge to get our boat , located
the Caribbean Sea to return to our starting point.

TOURING PUERTO CASTILLA
This
tour exits Trujillo very early in the morning to a place known
as El Banco de las Estrellas (“The Star Sandbank”) where we can
do snorkelling, later we go into the town of Castilla where we
have the option of going down and walk around the Garifuna fishing
village continuing towards the Port Facilities. In front of the
Port Facility are several shipwrecks where we can snorkel, observing
the colourful marine life.
Then we board our motor boat and pass in front of the Naval Base
at the point of Castilla. We disembark and walk around a 200 meters
of white sanded beach, very clean with a gorgeous scenery of clear
blue sea, the Trujillo Bay, the Capiro y Calentura mountains in
the background.
To conclude our trip we go through open sea and find sand dunes
that form hills where turtles lay their eggs, before we enter
the forest of Caribbean pine where we can take a break and listen
to the wind whistle along the pine trees, as we proceed we encounter
a plaque that commemorates the 500th year of Christopher Columbus’s
arrival.
Then we exit towards the beach to take our boat back to Trujillo.

Trujillo
In
the year 1502 Christopher Columbus landed his ships in this wonderful
city.
Then Trujillo became one of the first capital cities of the New
World with an important economic growth, this brought the attention
of British pirates to this area.
In order to protect the
Spanish patrimony the Santa Barbara Fortress was built to protect
them from pirate raids; here it stands today almost intact. The
Fortress was still in use at the time of the capture and execution
of William Walker, an American adventurer who sought fortune and
actually became Head of State of Nicaragua, took troops into Costa
Rica and Honduras, was shot in front of a firing squad here in 1860.
A very important factor
in Trujillo’s economic development was the arrival of the Garifuna
People, today we can find them at their communities such as; Santa
Fe, Guadalupe, Punta Betulia, Puerto Castilla, San Antonio and within
the city itself there is Barrio Cristales to name a few.
Trujillo and its surroundings
we find very beautiful and exciting tourism attractions; Capiro
y Calentura National Park, Guaymoreto Lagoon, Punta Castilla, Punta
Betulia, and trips to many communities that make up for a very interesting
Garifuna Route.
